2009 WNBA Finals

Team Kauffman Files Protest with CSAC

Buzz the Boxing Buzz Media Mascot

Team Kauffman and Gary Shaw Productions have formally filed a protest with the California State Athletic Commission seeking to overturn the verdict of last Friday's fight between Travis Kauffman and Tony Grano at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, CA.

In the last 1:50 of the fourth round, six critical errors in judgments by referee Wayne Hedgepeth of New Jersey compromised the integrity of what had been a terrific heavyweight boxing match.

Lamon Defeats Sprott

Lamon Brewster Defeats Michael Sprott by Decision

Former heavyweight champion "Relentless" Lamon Brewster cruised his way to an eight-round unanimous decision victory over Michael Sprott at Ostseehalle in Kiel, Germany. Judges Ingo Barrabas and Norbert Duernberger scored the fight 78-73, while Wilhelm Vogl saw the fight 79-73.

Brewster, now 35-4 (30 knockouts), boxed effectively throughout, backing up Sprott with his sheer aggressive nature and powerful left jab. At the end of the third round Brewster landed the most significant punch of the fight, a hard left hook following a grazing right hand that resulted in the only knockdown of the match. Sprott was hurt by the punch but the bell saved him from further damage.

The ex-British champion, 31-13 (16 knockouts), showed determination and grit as he survived Brewster's explosive attacks. Still it was not enough as Brewster's superior will and strength deterred Sprott from attempting anything too ambitious.

Brewster, the NABA heavyweight champion and current #11 ranked contender by the WBA, intends to springboard back into the world title picture with the win. He hopes to lure IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko into a rubber match in the near future. In their first match, Brewster overcame 13 months of inactivity to knock the Ukrainian out in five rounds in 2004. Brewster lost the rematch following 15 months of inactivity due to an eye injury.
Brewster is a native of Indianapolis, IN but resides in Los Angeles, CA. He is currently trained by Shadeed Saluki. This was Brewster's first fight with German-based promoter Sauerland Event, whom also promote IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham and WBA heavyweight champion Nicolai Valuev.

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ POUND 4 POUND CAMPAIGN

Macke Roberts of "FIGHT 2 THA FINISH" TV proudly announces the official endorsement and launching of the campaign to crown WBO/WBA/IBO & Ring Magazine world lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez as the new #1 pound 4 pound boxer in the world. Juan Manuel Marquez in his last two fights has defeated by spectacular knockout highly rated former lightweight world champions Joel Casamayor & Juan Diaz.

FIGHT 2 THA FINISH TV would like to thank all the boxing fans & boxing observers who have voiced their opinion on the pound 4 pound debate the response has been tremendous. We urge all the Juan Manuel Marquez fans worldwide If you haven't voiced your opinion on who is the real #1 pound 4 pound boxer in the world. Cast your vote now and send us your feedback on why Juan Manuel Marquez should become the new #1 pound 4 pound boxer in the world.

Juan Manuel Marquez is one of the most talented fighters of his boxing era. Juan Manuel Marquez is a three division world champion and a future first ballot hall of fame fighter. Juan Manuel Marquez has given Manny Pacquiao the two toughest fights of his career a controversial draw & a controversial split decision loss. Many boxing observers who have been polled about the two fights with Pacquiao felt Juan Manuel Marquez was the winner of both fights. The boxing fans and Juan Manuel Marquez want to see a clear cut winner in the rivalry with Manny Pacquiao. In his quest to do what is best for the sport of boxing Marquez has even traveled to the Philippines to personally speak with boxing fans and challenge Manny Pacquiao directly unfortunately Pacquiao has shown no interest in a third fight with Marquez.

Macke Roberts of FIGHT 2 THA FINISH TV says "I feel very strongly that Juan Manuel Marquez has earned the right to become the new #1 pound 4 pound boxer in the world. Juan Manuel Marquez in his last two fights has scored spectacular KO victories against Casamayor and Diaz who were highly rated fighters who had never been knocked out. I ask the boxing world what has Manny Pacquiao done lately to compare with that?

Macke Roberts of FIGHT 2 THA FINISH TV says "Juan Manuel Marquez is a true boxing warrior who does his talking in the ring. He is willing to fight anyone to get one step closer to his dream of a third fight with Manny Pacquiao. When a fighter like Marquez is willing to move up in weight from featherweight all the way up to jr. welterweight to make a third fight with Pacquiao that in itself shows the world he is a fighter who is willing to prove he is the best pound 4 pound fighter in the world. Is Manny Pacquiao willing to prove he is the best fighter in the world so far that remains to be seen??

Macke Roberts of FIGHT 2 THA FINISH TV says "I propose a town hall meeting or a panel discussion with myself and other boxing observers where everyone in attendance can present their opinions on the subject of who is the real #1 pound 4 pound boxer in the world Juan Manuel Marquez or Manny Pacquiao. It would also be interesting to give the great boxing fans the opportunity to call in and voice their opinions as well during this event. I feel a town hall meeting or a panel discussion about the pound 4 pound best fighter in the world would be a great event for a television network like ESPN, HBO, Showtime, or Versus.

ASHANTI JORDAN TALKS ABOUT HIS FUTURE

AFTER FLATTENING WILLIE PERRYMAN WITH A DEVASTATING STRAIGHT LEFT LAST WEEKEND AT THE HP PAVILION IN SAN JOSE, UNDEFEATED HEAVYWEIGHT ASHANTI JORDAN TALKS ABOUT HIS FUTURE.

By Jake Emen
ProFighting-fans.com

American heavyweight prospect Ashanti Jordan fought on the under card of the HBO Boxing show in San Jose on March 7. Now 8-0, Jordan is promoted by Golden Boy and is looking forward to getting into the ring again at the end of the month. I spoke with him briefly following his most recent win, about his training, his game and what's in store for the rest of the year.

Jordan has been getting some sparring time in with veteran Oleg Maskaev, who he says not only has huge power in his right hand but also "deceptive speed." Despite having only 8 fights as a pro, he feels that with sparring with guys such as Maskaev, he's getting key experience and learning a lot in the gym that he can apply in the ring.

Lamon Brewster Signs Promotional Deal With Sauerland Event

Lamon Brewster Signs Promotional Deal With Sauerland Event; Returns March 14 Against Michael Sprott in Germany

Former WBO heavyweight and current NABA heavyweight champion "Relentless" Lamon Brewster has signed a deal with German-based promotional outfit Sauerland Event. Brewster, 34-4 (30 knockouts) will fight in the co-featured slot of IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham's world title defense against Lajuan Simon on March 14 at the Ostseehalle in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

His opponent will be former British heavyweight champion Michael Sprott, who carries a record of 31-12 (16 knockouts), and is a native of Reading, England. Sprott, age 34, became the first man to knock out Olympic gold medalist Audley Harrison in 2007, accomplishing the feat in three rounds. He also holds wins over notable contenders Danny Williams and Timo Hoffman.

"I'm ready for this fight," said Brewster, a native of Indianapolis who now lives in Los Angeles, California. "This fight will be the first time that the world will get to see the real Lamon Brewster. After the death of my trainer Bill Slayton, it took me a long time to mentally regain my freedom. The world hasn't yet seen what I can do. I can sit here and tell you all day but seeing is believing."

Lamon Brewster, age 35, won the heavyweight title when he knocked out Wladimir Klitschko in five rounds in 2004. Brewster made three successful defenses before dropping a decision to Sergei Lyakhovich. In his last fight, Brewster knocked out Danny Batchelder in five rounds this past August.

Sauerland Event has guided the careers of world champions Henry Maske, Sven Ottke, Nicolay Valuev among others.

"I signed with Wilfried Sauerland because I had the pleasure of meeting him before and he's one of the fairest promoters around boxing," Brewster said. "If you ask around boxing, you don't have anyone saying 'Oh, he stole this from me.' I'm a Midwest boy with Southern ways. He just seemed like the type of guy that I could do business with because he won't be out to nickel and dime me."

Brewster says that after three fights, he will be ready for the rubber match with Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko won a rematch in 2007 when Brewster was recovering from a detached retina and a 15-month layoff. The first time they fought, Brewster had been off for 13 months. Brewster wants to find out what happens when they fight without a layoff.

"I had spent six months out of fifteen months laying face down before I fought him. I was at the point where I couldn't even hold my child. I wasn't right but I did the best I could. Because I knocked him out before I thought I had a chance but that was a lot of rust for me to shake. He knew the only chance he had to beat me was if I was coming off an injury and a layoff. But I'm right now and I'm taking on all comers. I'm knocking out everyone who steps in the ring with me.

"Anybody with a world title who isn't scared to fight me, come get it."

Strikeforce World Lightweight Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) and top challenger “El Nino” Gilbert Melendez (14-2) will revisit their classic, five-round battle when they collide in a rematch for the coveted 155-pound title at Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” mixed martial arts (MMA) event at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Saturday, April 11th live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The championship bout will be the 30-year-old Thomson’s first defense of the Strikeforce (MMA) belt and an opportunity to extend his win streak to nine consecutive fights.

In their first encounter, a fight that many critics hailed as “Fight of the Year,” Thomson continually beat Melendez to the punch en route to earning the unanimous decision win at the HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008. With the victory, Thomson regained his footing amongst the world’s top-10 competitors in the sport’s 155-pound division.

The showdown between Thomson and Melendez, former training partners who hail from neighboring cities in California’s Bay Area, had been brewing for months as both fighters continued to climb the ranks in the division.

The defeat marked Melendez’s first in the Strikeforce cage. The 26 year-old had previously been on fire, winning all four of his Strikeforce starts, including a meeting with Japan’s Tetsuji Kato in the main event of the first-ever MMA affair at the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif., on September 29, 2007.

On April 11, Melendez gets his chance at redemption.

Ironically, Thomson’s sole defeat in Strikeforce competition came at the hands of Clay “The Carpenter” Guida, the former junior collegiate wrestling star and first Strikeforce lightweight champion in history. Previously, Melendez had dominated Guida with superior striking to capture the Strikeforce title at the HP Pavilion on June 9, 2006.

The event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first one under its new television agreement with Showtime Networks Inc. The live telecast will feature up to five fights including a thrilling main event between three-time world champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock (24-9-1) and fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC) contested at a catch weight of 179 pounds.

Middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will also meet in a featured contest.

Tickets for “Shamrock vs. Diaz,” priced from $30, are available for purchase at the HP Pavilion box office (408-287-7070) as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (408-998-TIXS), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

Welterweight Tommy Rainone Looks To Make An Impact in 2009

The professional boxing career of Tommy "Razor" Rainone started out just as he had hoped, fighting 10 times within his first 13 months. Since then the fights have been coming in less frequently, despite his burgeoning popularity in his native Long Island, NY and the entire Tri-State area.

"I'd like to be fighting every two months," says Rainone, 12-2 (4 KO). "I'm hoping to fight in March and if so, I'd love to fight at least 5 times this year. I'm always in the gym, always ready."

Rainone, a 29-year-old Plainview resident, is a promotional and managerial free agent openly seeking representation for his career. In his last performance, Rainone traveled all the way to Argentina this past December, stopping Santos Galli in seven rounds.

What makes Rainone special is his unique appeal with the fans; Depending on location and adequate advance notice, Rainone routinely brings in between $7,000-$8,000 in ticket sales. On bigger shows, like at Madison Square Garden and similar venues, Rainone has the potential to generate $10-$15K in sales.

"It definitely adds an element to my fights," Rainone says of his fan base. "Having all of my family, friends and fans in the room at the same time for a common cause. That's something very special to me.

"Having a promoter who can get you the right fights makes life a lot easier. I've had to play the role of promoter, manager and fighter for most of my career and it can be burdensome. I'd like to sign with someone this year if it's the right fit. The opportunities have been there but I've had to turn them down because they weren't right for me."

Rainone aims to one day accomplish what every boxer sets out to do: Win a world title. He understands that he must walk before he runs and has set two short-term attainable goals that will bring him one step closer to his future objectives. The first is winning the New York State Welterweight Title, currently held by Daniel Sostre. The second is challenging fellow southpaw Demarcus "Chop Chop" Corley, a former world champion now competing in Rainone's weight range. Rainone feels confident that he can give his career the push it needs by defeating Corley, who has fought the likes of Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"I've been a huge boxing fan since I was six years old. I'm following my dream. I set myself small, reasonable goals, just taking it one step at a time. All I need are the opportunities."
